06 Mar UK beetroot – A heath food Titan of epic proportions!
The humble UK beetroot and why it could be the secret to better health…
The deep red juice has earned beetroot the reputation as one of the most extraverted vegetables and we the British consumer love it!
Similar to many modern vegetables beetroot was bought to these shores by the Romans who used it as an aphrodisiac amonst other uses. It shot up in commercial value in the 19th century when it was discovered beets could be converted to sugar. Today it is commercially grown in USA, Russia, France, Spain, Poland, Germany and of course Britain!
Blood pressure management
Beetroot is rich in Nitrates. When ingested our body converts nitrates into nitric acid. A chemical believed by scientists to lower blood pressure.
Can Beetroot aid my exercise performance?
A review in 2013 found that ‘inactive’ and ‘recreationally active’ individuals saw ‘moderate improvements’. However it remains a key ingredient in healthy smoothies, looks great too…
A study in 2010 suggested that the juice may help to increase blood flow to areas of the brain. This however was a small and short term study, one area we believe deserves greater investigation.
Other than Nitrates what does this superfood contain?
A fresh product of exceptional nutritional value beetroot belongs to the same family as chard and spinach. This of course means you can eat the greens. Greens are rich in calcium, iron and vitamins A and C. The roots are rich in folic acid, manganese, potassium and a great source of fibre and protein.
